Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies

2021

Vequist seems certain to be voted champion 2-year-old filly after rallying to victory in the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1). A runaway winner of the Spinaway (G1) during the summer at Saratoga, Vequist was overlooked at Keeneland after finishing second behind Dayoutoftheoffice in the Frizette (G1) at Belmont Park.

But under a perfect ground-saving ride from jockey Joel Rosario, Vequist was able to turn the tables. Dayoutoftheoffice was the quickest into stride, leading by a length through splits of :23.30, :47.12, and 1:11.31. But Vequist was always prominent, and turning for home she slipped through an opening inside to forge clear and claim the 1 1/16-mile race by two lengths in 1:42.30.

“I tried to save ground. It was hard for her in the turn because I had a horse outside me,” said Rosario. “But she did great. I never gave up my position. As soon as I asked her she went on with it. It was a very good performance.”

Dayoutoftheoffice held for second place in a three-way photo finish, edging Girl Daddy and Simply Ravishing by a nose. Favored Princess Noor weakened to finish fifth, while Crazy Beautiful and Thoughtfully trailed the field.

A daughter of 2016 Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist, Vequist is trained by Butch Reid on behalf of owners Gary Barber, Wachtel Stables, and Swilcan Stable. Firing off three big efforts against Grade 1 company has cemented Vequist as the early favorite for the 2021 Kentucky Oaks, and with 24 Road to the Kentucky Oaks qualification points to her credit, she’s already well on her way to qualifying for the historic showdown at Churchill Downs.

Breeders’ Cup Classic Results

Ky Elk Lottery Results 2021

The final and richest race on Breeders’ Cup Championships weekend is the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic. The 1 ¼ distance race, Saturday afternoon at Churchill Downs, was special for trainer John Sadler. Sadler enjoyed watching Accelerate surge to the front at the top of the stretch and gallop home to win the Classic by 1 length over late-charging longshot Gunnevera. Sadler snapped a 0-for-44 drought in the Breeders’ Cup, and the 5-2 favorite Accelerate won his fourth straight race.
“In getting the big one, I couldn’t ask for a better day,” trainer John Sadler said.
Accelerate has now won 10 of 22 lifetime starts with 20 in the money finishes. By capturing the Classic, Accelerate added $3.3 million to his career earnings which now stands at $5.79 million.
“I think he’s done something no one has done before. He swept all the California Grade 1’s and he was undefeated (4-for-4) at a mile-and-a-quarter,” said owner Kosta Hronis of Hronis Racing. “I’ve heard he did all of this in the wrong year, well, maybe Justify won the Triple Crown in the wrong year.”
Mendelssohn set the pace in the Classic, a blistering opening quarter in :22.68 seconds and a half in 46.46. He maintained the lead through three quarters in 1:10.61 and a mile in 1:35.90. But Accelerate made his move to pass Mendelssohn in the stretch and turned back a bid by Thunder Snow (14-1), who finished third by a nose in front of Yoshida (14-1). Hard charging Gunnevera (30-1) rallied for second and Mendelssohn faded to fifth.
Accelerate paid $7.40 to win and covered 1 ¼ miles in 2:02.94. Jockey Joel Rosario won the Classic after taking Game Winner to the winner’s circle Friday in the Juvenile.
“That was about as good as it gets. That horse is simply unbelievable.”
A $2 exacta with Accelerate and Gunnevera returned $261.60. The .50 cent trifecta paid $806.55 and the .10 cent superfecta scored a big $1,617.91. A crowd of 70,423 enjoyed Saturday’s big day of racing at the World Championships, and Accelerate delivered as the favorite at the 35th Breeders’ Cup at Churchill Downs.
